NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The cause of death for legendary singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist Dolly Parton has been revealed, one day after the generational music icon died at the age of 80.

Representatives for Parton said she died Tuesday, August 25, following a “brief battle with cancer.” The specific type of cancer has not been publicly disclosed. Parton died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville while surrounded by loved ones. (apnews.com)

The announcement provides new information following months of concern surrounding Parton’s health. She had previously postponed and later canceled performances while undergoing treatment for several health issues.

Earlier this month, Parton missed a scheduled appearance at Dollywood, telling fans through a recorded message that she had been experiencing dizziness and dehydration and that her doctor advised her not to travel.

Parton had also spoken publicly about problems involving her immune and digestive systems. In 2025, she dealt with kidney stones and an infection that required medical treatment. Despite those issues, she repeatedly reassured fans that she remained focused on recovering and continuing her work. (people.com)

Her representatives have now confirmed that cancer ultimately played a role in her death, describing her battle with the disease as brief. No additional details about when Parton was diagnosed or the form of cancer she had have been released.

A Career That Spanned Generations

Parton leaves behind one of the most recognizable legacies in American entertainment.

Born in Tennessee in 1946, Parton rose from humble beginnings to become an international superstar whose career stretched across nearly seven decades. She wrote thousands of songs and became known worldwide for classics including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.”

Her music sold more than 100 million records worldwide, while her influence extended far beyond country music. She became a successful actress, appearing in films including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. (apnews.com)

Parton was equally recognized for her philanthropy. Her Imagination Library provided books to children around the world, and she contributed $1 million toward research that helped support development of a COVID-19 vaccine. (reuters.com)

Her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, died in March 2025 at the age of 82. Parton later acknowledged that she had put some of her own health concerns aside while caring for him.

Parton continued working even as her health declined, with projects underway involving music, business ventures and a Broadway musical based on her life.

Her death marks the loss of a performer whose impact crossed generations and genres, transforming her from a country music star into one of the most recognizable figures in American popular culture.

Dolly Parton was 80 years old.
