DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham firefighter died in the line of duty Thursday morning while crews battled a large building fire in southeast Durham. Two other firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital.
The fire was reported around 3:15 a.m. in the 400 block of Marly Drive, near South Miami Boulevard and Highway 70. Flames and smoke were seen coming through the roof as firefighters worked to control the blaze.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed the firefighter’s death and said it is assisting the Durham Fire Department. The two injured firefighters were expected to survive. Their names, along with the identity of the fallen firefighter, have not been released.
Officials asked the public to avoid the area as emergency crews responded. The cause of the fire has not been announced.
