PATERSON, N.J. — A devastating Halloween night house fire in Paterson claimed the lives of five family members, including three children, in what officials are calling one of the city’s worst tragedies in recent memory.
Fire Breaks Out Just Before 10 P.M.
The blaze was reported shortly before 10 p.m. Friday on the 100 block of Emerson Avenue in Paterson. When firefighters arrived, they were met with heavy flames engulfing the rear and upper floors of a two-story home. Strong winds quickly fueled the fire, spreading it throughout the structure before crews could gain control.
Inside the home, firefighters discovered five victims — two adults and three children — all believed to be members of the same family. Officials said the adults were a 39-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman. The children were ages 14, 12, and 7.
Firefighters and Neighbors Tried to Help
Neighbors reported hearing screams and seeing flames shoot from the roof as they rushed to help. Some residents on the first floor tried to reach the second level, but thick smoke and intense heat made it impossible. One neighbor reportedly used a garden hose in an effort to contain the flames before firefighters arrived.
Despite a rapid response, the blaze spread too quickly. Two firefighters were taken to the hospital for minor injuries and later released.
Community in Mourning
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh called it “a heartbreaking loss for the entire community,” describing the fire as one of the city’s most tragic events in years. Local officials and neighbors gathered outside the charred remains of the home Saturday morning, leaving flowers and offering prayers for the victims.
The American Red Cross is assisting several surviving residents who escaped the fire but lost everything. Seven people lived in the multi-family home in total, and those who survived are now displaced.
Investigation Ongoing
Fire investigators from the Paterson Fire Department and Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office are working to determine the exact cause of the fire. Early indications suggest the blaze began on the first floor, but the cause remains under investigation. Authorities have not found evidence of foul play at this time.
Officials said the speed and intensity of the flames were worsened by high winds. Siding on a neighboring home was melted by the radiant heat.
Remembering the Victims
Neighbors described the family as kind and close-knit. The children were known to play outside regularly and were beloved by the community. “The kids were always laughing,” one neighbor said. “It’s hard to believe they’re gone.”
As the investigation continues, the city of Paterson has pledged to support the survivors and honor the memory of those lost in the tragedy.
