UNITED STATES — Verizon customers across the country were left without reliable wireless service for hours on Wednesday after a widespread network outage knocked out voice calling and disrupted data connections in multiple states.

The outage began shortly after 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time and lasted until approximately 10:15 p.m., resulting in nearly 10 hours of service disruption for many customers.

What Customers Experienced

Throughout the afternoon and evening, Verizon users reported widespread issues including:

  • Phones displaying “SOS” or “Emergency Calls Only”
  • Inability to make or receive regular phone calls
  • Dropped calls and delayed text messages
  • Intermittent or completely lost data service

Major metro areas including Philadelphia, New York, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles were among the hardest hit, though reports came in from customers nationwide.

At the peak of the outage, hundreds of thousands of customers were reporting problems across outage-tracking platforms and social media.

Emergency Service Concerns

In several regions, local officials issued advisories warning that the outage could interfere with normal 911 calling capabilities. Some emergency management agencies urged residents to use landlines or alternative carriers if they needed emergency assistance during the outage window.

Despite those concerns, Verizon said emergency calling remained operational in most areas, though some customers still reported difficulty connecting.

Verizon’s Response

Verizon acknowledged the outage Wednesday afternoon and said engineering teams worked throughout the day to restore service.

Late Wednesday night, the company confirmed the network had been stabilized and service restored. Verizon apologized for the disruption and said it would issue account credits to affected customers.

Customers were also advised to restart their phones to reconnect to the network once service returned.

What Caused the Outage?

As of Thursday, Verizon has not publicly released a detailed explanation for what caused the outage. The company said a full review is underway and additional information will be released once the investigation is complete.

Federal regulators are monitoring the situation due to the size of the outage and its potential impact on public safety communications.

What Comes Next

Verizon says it is reviewing internal systems and safeguards to prevent a similar disruption from happening again. Customers can expect further communication regarding account credits and any additional compensation.

For now, service has been restored, but many customers are still looking for answers after one of the largest wireless outages in recent years.
