Former New York City Mayor and longtime public figure Rudy Giuliani has been hospitalized and remains in critical but stable condition, according to a statement released Sunday by his spokesperson.
Ted Goodman, a spokesperson for Giuliani, confirmed the 81-year-old was admitted to the hospital but did not disclose the cause of the medical emergency or provide details regarding his diagnosis.
“Mayor Rudy Giuliani is currently in the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition,” Goodman said in a statement. “Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same strength now.”
The statement also asked supporters to keep Giuliani in their prayers.
Giuliani served as mayor of New York City from 1994 through 2001 and became nationally recognized for his leadership in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, earning the nickname “America’s Mayor.” He later remained active in politics and legal circles, including serving as a personal attorney and advisor to former President Donald Trump.
The hospitalization comes less than a year after Giuliani was seriously injured in a New Hampshire car crash that left him with a fractured vertebra and other injuries.
At this time, it is unclear whether the current hospitalization is related to those prior injuries or stems from a separate medical issue.
No timeline has been given for how long Giuliani is expected to remain hospitalized, and officials have not released further details on his prognosis.
This is a developing story and updates will be provided as more information becomes available
