Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL Tuesday afternoon, saying he needs to focus on his mental health.
Johnson, 36, missed the Eagles’ Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. The team listed his absence as being for personal reasons. Johnson announced his retirement two days later.
The decision comes after Johnson had said earlier this year that the 2026 season would likely be his last. He cited changing priorities, including his growing children and his parents’ health.
Johnson was selected by Philadelphia with the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and spent his entire career with the Eagles. He became one of the league’s top right tackles, earning six Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro honors. He also helped Philadelphia win two Super Bowls.
Johnson has spoken publicly about his mental health in the past. He took a leave of absence during the 2021 season while dealing with anxiety and depression.
His retirement marks the end of a 14-season NFL career and a major change for an Eagles offensive line he anchored for more than a decade.
