QUAKERTOWN, Pa. — Quakertown Borough Manager and Police Chief Scott McElree has returned to work on a reduced schedule as he continues recovering from injuries connected to the February student-led anti-ICE protest that drew widespread attention across Bucks County.
The announcement was made during a recent Quakertown Borough Council meeting. Video from the meeting showed council members informing the public of McElree’s return, while several attendees in the crowd reacted negatively to the announcement.
Officials did not clarify during the meeting whether McElree has fully resumed duties as police chief in addition to returning to his borough manager responsibilities.
McElree has remained at the center of controversy following the February 20 protest involving Quakertown Community High School students. Demonstrations were organized in response to immigration enforcement concerns, with dozens of students participating in the walkout event.
Public criticism intensified after video circulated online appearing to show McElree restraining a teenage girl outside a local business during the protest response. The incident sparked heated debate across the region over police tactics and crowd control measures used during the demonstrations.
The protests led to multiple arrests and prompted calls for independent reviews into the actions taken by law enforcement officers that day.
Since the incident, community members have remained divided, with some supporting police actions while others have continued demanding accountability and transparency from borough officials.
No additional information has been released regarding McElree’s medical recovery timeline or whether any restrictions remain in place as he transitions back into his duties.
If additional developments are released by borough officials or law enforcement, we will update this story.
