A wildfire in western Los Angeles County has grown to over 2,900 acres as of Tuesday. Evacuations are underway, and flames have jumped across the highway, leading some to consider sheltering on the beach. At a care home in Pasadena, workers raced to evacuate elderly residents as a blaze loomed just a block away.
The out-of-control Palisades fire is advancing at a rate of about five football fields per minute, prompting Los Angeles to declare a state of emergency. Firefighters have warned that “tornado-like” winds are complicating their efforts to contain the fires.
Additionally, three other fires have erupted in Los Angeles County: the 500-acre Hurst Fire north of San Fernando, the 2,000-acre Eaton Fire in Altadena, and the 75-acre Woodley Fire in the Sepulveda Basin. More than 150,000 homes and buildings in the county are currently without power.
