NEW CASTLE, Del. (July 11, 2025) — A water search is underway Friday morning after a tractor-trailer cab crashed through a barrier on the Delaware Memorial Bridge and plunged into the Delaware River, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around 3:40 a.m., when the southbound truck — a cab-only tractor-trailer with no attached trailer — crossed three lanes of I-295 traffic and slammed into a concrete pad near the Delaware anchorage before breaching a concrete wall and falling into the river below, according to the Delaware River & Bay Authority (DRBA).
Emergency crews, including dive teams and marine units, are actively searching the water for the truck and driver. It is currently unknown whether anyone else was inside the cab at the time of the crash.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and there are no reports of injuries to bystanders. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The left southbound lane of the bridge remains closed as the search and investigation continue. Motorists should expect delays and are urged to use caution in the area.
The Delaware Memorial Bridge spans the Delaware River, connecting New Castle, Delaware, and Pennsville, New Jersey, and is a critical route for regional traffic.
