LOWER SAUCON TWP., Pa. — A welfare check in Lower Saucon Township turned into a deadly standoff Wednesday, drawing tactical units, shutting down part of Applebutter Road for hours, and prompting a shelter-in-place alert for nearby residents.
According to emergency dispatch information, officers were called around 10:33 a.m. to the 2400 block of Applebutter Road for a welfare check involving a 37-year-old man reported to be in a mental health crisis and allegedly armed. Authorities later said the situation escalated into a barricaded incident.
Northampton County Emergency Management Services issued a shelter-in-place alert for anyone within a half-mile of the scene, advising residents to remain indoors and stay away from doors and windows until further notice.
Pennsylvania State Police said the incident involved an officer-involved shooting. The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities said no other individuals were hurt.
Police closed Applebutter Road at Ringhoffer Road and Sherryhill Road for much of the day as investigators worked the scene. The roadway remained closed until about 10 p.m. before reopening later that night.
